Theta Iota Chapter Advisor Announced

Posted: Mon, Sep 25 2006

Due to recent promotions within the ranks of Sigma Nu International Fraternity, Inc, Theta Iota Chapter now has a new Chapter Advisor.

Effectively immediately, Derek Burks (QI 225) will serve as the new Theta Iota Chapter Advisor. His appointment was made after careful consideration from executive director Brad Beacham and Mid-South Beta Division Commander Chuck Bibeau.

At this summer's Grand Chapter held in Indianapolis, IN, past Chapter Advisor Tony Marable (QI 287) was elected to the High Council as Vice Regent of the General Fraternity. Because of Marable's new role, he can no longer serve as Chapter Advisor to avoid any possible conflicts of interest in the future.

"I have served as Theta Iota's Chapter Advisor since 1998 and it has been the highlight of my fraternal experience," says Marable. "No role in Sigma Nu was more rewarding than Chapter Advisor. It was a goal I wanted to achieve for the longest time. The Fraternity gave me so much; it was only fitting that I give as much of myself back to it. Wherever I go and whatever I do within the Fraternity, I take Theta Iota with me."

Marable will serve for the next two years on High Council and at the 63rd Grand Chapter which will be held in Austin, Texas in 2008. As Vice Regent, Marable plans to help implement and advance the General Fraternity's Strategic Plan; work with the Regent in increasing the numbers of alumni volunteers all across North America; and work effectively with the Staff at Headquarters.

"Marable has been a tremendous asset to Theta Iota for the past eight years," says Bibeau. "Burks will have some pretty big shoes to fill but I am quite certain that he is capable of continuing along the path of excellence like Marable. Burks was selected from a pool of interested Sigma Nu Alumni who live and work in the Middle Tennessee area. His heart has always been with Sigma Nu and I know he will take great pride and responsibility in his new role."

Burks's experience in Sigma Nu includes House Manager between 2000-2002 and Board Member at large for Sigma Nu House Corporation since 2002. Burks works as a criminal and family law attorney for Cynthia J. Bohn and Associates in Nashville, TN.

"I am excited and honored to have this opportunity to serve the brothers at Theta Iota," says Burks. "My experience with the fraternity and as a practicing attorney will allow me to give advice to the chapter in ways that I believe will be beneficial to both the active and alumni chapters. I appreciate this opportunity to serve and plan to make Theta Iota a Rock Chapter again in two years."

The announcement was made by email to all alumni after Recruitment Week 2006 concluded.
