Isaac Hayes, star of recorded music, film and television, will deliver the fall 2004 commencement address at 10 AM Dec 18 in Murphy Center at MTSU. Brothers Jeffrey A Cathey (QI 323), Michael A Epley (QI 324), Anthony DeFerio (QI 352), and Dave Cherry (QI 353) will be graduating from the Active Chapter.
The expected 1,321 undergraduate and 208 graduate degree candidates
will be a record, reports Sherian Huddleston, assistant vice provost, Enrollment
Management.
This will be the largest December graduation the university
has ever had, Huddleston says. For several years we have seen the
December graduation numbers growing, and now, this years December graduation
is about as large as our May graduation, which has traditionally been the largest
in terms of graduates.
Each degree candidate will be provided with up to eight tickets
that guarantee seating in Murphy Center. Tickets will be available Nov 29 - Dec 3 in the KUC lobby, just outside Phillips Bookstore. Graduating students, however,
may invite as many friends and family members as they choose, with overflow
seating provided in the Alumni Memorial Gym, where the commencement ceremony
will be shown on large-screen monitor with surround sound.
Hayes, who won seven scholarships for vocal music but chose not
to pursue any of them, pursued music on his own with much success as not only
a musician, but also a producer and arranger for some 200 songs -- including
Sam & Daves You Don't Know Like I Know, Hold On!
I'm Comin, When Something is Wrong with My Baby, Wrap
It Up and the Grammy-winning rhythm & blues smash Soul Man.
We have the knowledge, technology, research, resources
and experience, Hayes has said. Lets turn crime, illiteracy,
unhealthy, unproductive poverty lifestyles around from the ground up.
One child, one community at a time, we can change the world. Let's give our
children our best.
